Citizen journalism: It’s coming at us like a freight train

Posted by Will Young

I am not a stat whore. In fact, I only keep track of my stats for the sole purpose of determining what SEO strategies work better.

Lately though I’ve had a large number of folks who know me in “real life” comment on Unobjective Intelligence. Not all the comments have been affirming, but they haven’t all been bad either. One Sunday at Element 3 separate people came up to me to talk to me about my blog. I enjoyed the face to face feedback, as it sort of demonstrated the livelihood of this little world I’ve created. One guy said he liked that I didn’t censor myself and that it showed in my entries, another said that he has been encouraged by UI and one guy told me that while he disagreed with 99 percent of what I’ve published here, he still can’t resist reading it daily because it helps him to rethink the way he looks at certain situations based on the things he has read. I like hearing those types of things, not because I have a big head, but because it shows me that UI is fulfilling it’s purpose.

This thing was initially started solely as a way for me to vent and over the nearly 3 years it’s been in existence (in whatever form) it has grown into what it has become now. I’m averaging roughly 150 to 200 hits a day, mostly from folks who pick it up on search-engines but, better than that I’d say that on average 20 to 25 folks a day are regular visitors. Thank you, for going on this journey with me. UI is no longer me ‘venting’ but, has become a very unique way for me to share my commentary on culture, politics, life, current events and so much more. I have been involved in some form of journalism for almost 10 years now and I have to say that thus far blogging has easily taken the cake as far as my favorite medium.

I say all that to say this: THIS IS THE FUTURE OF MEDIA.

Blogging, Micro-blogging, hyperlocal-blogging, social networking is the future of media folks and if you’re not embracing it now you had better start. I stated in a podcast a while back that in 2 years citizen journalism is going to have taken over. I REALLY believe that to be true. Look at the giants that are crumbling because they didn’t embrace the end-user in a timely fashion. Newspapers are failing because they waited to long to get on board with technological advances. Radio stations are failing because they jumped on the technological advance train WAY too early. Television stations are failing because we expect them to be balanced and neutral and NONE of them are.
Blogging and citizen journalism is the future and it’s coming at us like a freight train. Folks are realizing that our current system of obtaining news is flawed and so they’re starting their own methods.

Now more than ever, YOU HAVE A VOICE, use it, speak your peace, SAY WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY! Don’t live in fear of your opinion, or what the opinions of others are going to be as a result of your opinion - thats ridiculous and anyone who lives like that is living a sad existence. The ability for you to say what you want to say is one of the greatest gifts and freedoms you’ve been awarded, take full advantage of it!

If you’ve got something to say, write a letter to the editor, and when you get like me and have written enough letters to the editor become your own editor. The lovely thing is you don’t have to be fair and balanced when you’re blogging. If folks don’t want to read your blog they wont, for some reason though if folks don’t like a news station or a talk show host on the radio they’ll watch or listen anyway…it’s quite hilarious how that works. If you would like to know the easiest way to start a blog feel free to contact me using one of the methods under the ‘Get At Me’ bar on the left hand side of your screen.

Once again thank you for reading Unobjective Intelligence, and thank you for your feedback!
